چکیده

Use of qualitative features facilitates viewpoint-invariant recognition. Are such features processed by a structural description system? Subjects responded that they \remembered" or were only \familiar" with previously seen objects that were either qualitatively (QL) or quantitatively (QT) diierent from one another. The proportion of remember responses was equivalent for QL and QT objects and decreased when the targets were rotated from the studied orientation. Familiar responses were unaaected by rotation. A QL advantage at 45 degrees of rotation was due entirely to a greater number of familiar responses. A multiple-memory-systems interpretation will be discussed.

Is human object recognition better described by geon structural descriptions or by multiple views? Comment on Biederman and Gerhardstein (1993).

Is human object recognition viewpoint dependent or viewpoint invariant under "everyday" conditions? I. Biederman and P.C. Gerhardstein (1993) argued that viewpoint-invariant mechanisms are used almost exclusively. However, our analysis indicates that (a) their conditions for immediate viewpoint invariance lack the generality to characterize a wide range of recognition phenomena, (b) the extensi...

Perceptual Constraints on Implicit Memory for Visual Features: Statistical Learning in Human Infants

Th e visual world contains an enormous amount of information that, to a naïve infant, must initially appear to be overwhelmingly complex. Yet within a few weeks aft er birth, infants are recognizing familiar objects and controlling a variety of motor systems to interact with them. Even if some of these object-recognition mechanisms are triggered by innate biases (e.g., for faces), there are sim...

Size Precedes View: Developmental Emergence of Invariant Object Representations in Lateral Occipital Complex

Although object perception involves encoding a wide variety of object properties (e.g., size, color, viewpoint), some properties are irrelevant for identifying the object. The key to successful object recognition is having an internal representation of the object identity that is insensitive to these properties while accurately representing important diagnostic features. Behavioral evidence ind...

Object Recognition Can Be Viewpoint Dependent or Invariant – It's Just a Matter of Time and Task

As we move through our environment, we encounter familiar objects from various viewpoints. Despite the ensuing variability of the images projected onto the retina, we have seemingly little difficulty when it comes to recognizing objects we encounter. We can, however, see how the objects are oriented, suggesting that object recognition is to a certain degree dissociable from perception of other ...

Psychophysical and physiological evidence for viewer-centered object representations in the primate.

A key question concerning the perception of 3D objects is the spatial reference frame used by the brain to represent them. The celerity of the recognition process could be explained by the visual system's ability to quickly transform stored models of familiar 3D objects, or by its ability to specify the relationship among viewpoint-invariant features or volumetric primitives that can be used to...
